The Leadership Mindset That Changes Everything

We often think of leadership as taking charge, making decisions, and standing firm. But in my just-published Community Catalysts podcast interview with Kris Amundson—former Virginia State Legislator and former Fairfax County School Board Member and Chair—she reminded me of something essential: leadership is about listening, adapting, and adding voices to the conversation.

Kris’s path to leadership started with a simple thought: “Somebody ought to do something about that.” What set her apart was that she acted on it—first as a parent advocating for her local school, then as a school board member, and later as a state legislator tackling education policy at the highest level. Along the way, she learned a lesson that too many leaders resist: compromise isn’t a weakness—it’s how real change happens.

She shares powerful stories about unexpected collaborations, hard-fought policy battles, and the art of bringing people together—even those who disagree—to make government work. If you’re looking for inspiration on how to lead with pragmatism, purpose, and persistence, this episode is for you.

This episode is part of a special RELI-sponsored series featuring civic leaders from across Northern Virginia. Thanks to the Regional Elected Leaders Initiative (RELI) at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government, these conversations are helping local leaders everywhere gain insights into collaboration, governance, and public service.

Ilryong Moon came to the United States from Korea at 17. He didn’t speak much English. His family had little money. His parents, both undereducated, worked long hours to support their children in a new and unfamiliar country. Ilryong repeated a year of high school just to learn the language. From there, he went on to graduate from Harvard, build a successful law career, and eventually serve for decades on the school board of one of the nation’s largest—and most diverse—school districts.

By Matt Lehrman April 16, 2025
Last week, local leaders from across the country came together for a 90-minute virtual conversation about the words we use, the values we hold, and the challenges we face. Mayors, council members, and civic officials shared candid insights—not just about policy, but about how everyday language now feels risky, and how they stay grounded in community service. Here’s what they shared.
