Mayor Greg Hines talks resilience after tornado strikes Rogers, Ark.

Mayor Greg Hines on the Community Catalysts Podcast.

Greg Hines

Mayor of Rogers, AR

I invited Greg Hines on our weekly podcast because I wanted to learn about his record of steady leadership over 14 years as Mayor of Rogers, Arkansas, home to the Daisy Airgun Museum, the last working stop on the Arkansas and Missouri Railroad, and America’s first Walmart store.

But I had to rewrite my question list after one of the largest tornadoes in state history struck the city on May 30. I can’t say how grateful I am that Mayor Hines was able to keep our interview date and talk about crisis response and long-term resilience.

Ilryong Moon came to the United States from Korea at 17. He didn’t speak much English. His family had little money. His parents, both undereducated, worked long hours to support their children in a new and unfamiliar country. Ilryong repeated a year of high school just to learn the language. From there, he went on to graduate from Harvard, build a successful law career, and eventually serve for decades on the school board of one of the nation’s largest—and most diverse—school districts.

Mayors, council members, and civic officials shared candid insights—not just about policy, but about how everyday language now feels risky, and how they stay grounded in community service. Here’s what they shared.
