The Unfortunate Impression of a Unanimous Council Vote.

What message does it send when a council agrees, but with little discussion?

A town council member recently shared this concern:

“There’s an unfortunate impression that when our Council votes 7-0 on a matter that we are “pushovers” or are being “passive” to what has been proposed. As a Council, we need to do a better job of demonstrating the quality of research and the diligence of effort that goes into our decision making.”

It’s an intriguing point: One of the potential virtues of disagreement is its ability to illuminate and draw attention to a Council’s careful deliberation.

But does the absence of disagreement somehow signal that a Council is being less than thorough or reveal a lack of diligence? And if so, what can (or must!?) a mindful and purposeful Council do to combat that impression?

That’ll be the discussion topic of our February Zoom Chat for elected, appointed and staff municipal leaders. Whether you share the concern - or have direct experience in meeting the challenge - you’re invited to a discussion that’s all about asking questions, sharing experiences, and exchanging advice.

There’s absolutely no presentation. There’s no pressure. (You’re welcome to chat or just to observe). And there’s no cost.

You’re invited to a friendly, focused, and fruitful conversation among colleagues nationwide. Our January chat involved municipal leaders from cities and towns in Kansas, Washington, Colorado, Alaska, North Dakota, Virginia, South Carolina, Arizona, Tennessee, Missouri, Texas, and Pennsylvania - so it’s a supportive and far-reaching networking opportunity, too!

It’s taking place live on Monday, February 27 at 1pm EDT, 10am PDT.  [EVENT HAS PASSED.]

Politics is often described as broken. Too influenced by money. Too opaque. Too hard to trust. This week’s Community Catalysts episode, Positive Politics, offers a different and genuinely encouraging frame.

Trust is one of those words that gets used easily in public life. We rely on it, assume it exists, and rarely think about it until it’s tested.

Maureen Coffey, Vice Chair of the Arlington County (VA) Board is the youngest person ever elected to that role. Arlington sits immediately next to Washington, DC, which means local leadership there often feels national decisions quickly and personally. The pressures are real, and the expectations are high.
